Interview with Jacob 'Jakezesnake' Öhlund

Jacob 'Jakezesnake' Öhlund

Format: HUSNG Turbo & Regular speed
Limit: $200-$500
Location: Sweden
Age: 22
Playing professionally: 3-4 years

Charles Hawk: How long have you been playing poker professionally? Tell me about your journey of climbing up the limits till now.

Jacob 'Jakezesnake' Öhlund: I deposited my first money the day i turned 18. I had played some freerolls and microstakes mtts back when I was 15 so I wasn't too unfamiliar with the game when I made my first deposit. From there on, I tried out all different kinds of formats and games, and when I tried out HUSNGs, I climbed somewhat quickly from the $3.50s to where I am now.

Charles Hawk: What are the advantages of being a husng turbo reg compared with husng hypers and spin and goes?

Jacob 'Jakezesnake' Öhlund: The biggest advantage with turbos+regspeeds is definitely that your results are a lot more consistent. You won't have any 100 BI downswings which I sometimes hear hyper-regs have had.

Another advantage is that there's no divisions around at higher stakes turbos which gives you more freedom in who you want to play and who you don't want to play with.

Charles Hawk: How is the action these days? Do you have any serious concerns about action decreasing because of Spins? If not now, let's say when PS will introduce $100 buy-in games?

Jacob 'Jakezesnake' Öhlund: Obviously the action is continuously decreasing and you sometimes have to wait a long while before getting games, but I'm not very worried about action decreasing because of spins. I think that, as the recreational player pool gets thinner at turbos, the player pool of regulars also gets thinner, so even though there's a decrease of recreational players, there's on the other hand fewer regulars to share the games with.

Charles Hawk: I have heard opinions from spins regs that poker hasn't been so soft since 2007 after spins were introduced. Probably you have heard such opinions (which were true back then) when husng hypers were introduced too, right? Why didn't you transition to hypers back then and why shouldn't some good husng turbo and husng hyper regs transition to spins now as well?

Jacob 'Jakezesnake' Öhlund: Yes I've certainly heard about it and I experienced it myself the few times I played spins and HU hypers. I did consider making the transition from turbos to hypers but in the end I don't find the hyper formats very enjoyable. So even though I possibly could've made more money making the transition it still wouldn't have been worth it if I didn't enjoy playing poker in the first place.

Charles Hawk: So you are not transitioning mainly due to bigger enjoyment factor in Turbos? What is the most enjoyable about it? :)

Jacob 'Jakezesnake' Öhlund: Well the fact that turbos are played deeper just makes it such that your decisions differ a lot depending on stack depths. The times I've been playing hypers I feel like the grind becomes too monotonous in a way.

Charles Hawk: How about not transitioning because of psychological aspects related with bigger variance and more flips-per-minute, which your brain/eyes should handle?

Jacob 'Jakezesnake' Öhlund: No, this doesn't weigh in on my decision to not transition. I'm quite used to this already when playing MTT sessions.

Charles Hawk: How many different poker rooms do you play? What is the percentage of action comparing PS only with all other poker networks/rooms?

Jacob 'Jakezesnake' Öhlund: I do play on 4 different rooms but Stars is obviously dominating when it comes to action.. I'd say that at least 95% of my games are played at Stars.

Charles Hawk: How many games on average per hour could you catch against fishes and recs in your 200-500 limit (all poker rooms combined)?

Jacob 'Jakezesnake' Öhlund: It's hard to say because it differs a lot depending on what hours you're playing. If you sit lobbies during morning hours you'll sometimes end up waiting 2 hours before your first game. If you're sitting lobbies during evening hours you sometimes end up with up to 8 tables vs only recreationals.

Charles Hawk: What do you do while waiting for the action? Do you have/or have had any problems with staying sharp and ready for new games if they do not appear straight away?

Jacob 'Jakezesnake' Öhlund: Maybe sometimes, but I don't really struggle with it. I drink a TON of coffee every day so I'm usually pretty sharp when grinding.

Charles Hawk: Who are your top five best HUSNG Turbos regs these days? Have you played any of 1,000-5,000 regs to try them out?

Jacob 'Jakezesnake' Öhlund: I feel hesitant to answer that, since I haven't played all the guys who play the highest, but in no particular order I'll say that justnopain, adonis112 and fortheswarmm are extremely good.

Charles Hawk: What are your long-term goals related with poker? How about long-term non-poker goals?

Jacob 'Jakezesnake' Öhlund: I actually don't like setting goals. I used to set goals to motivate myself and work harder but in practice it doesn't work for me. Not reaching a goal brings disappointment and reaching a goal doesn't really bring anything because you basically just accomplished something that you already expected from yourself in the first Place. So I don't set any goals, I'm better off without it.
