A girl and a challenge!

Hi everybody,

I'm a french canadian girl (so sorry about my english) and I love challenges.

Last year in 2013, I went to live in the forest. I brought 2 axes, bucksaw, one zippo, foods, tarps, snowshoes, ropes, tools, pan, kettle, buckets, a sleeping bag that can go - 30 C and I went out there 45 minutes walks from every roads, close to a stream of water. All alone. It was harsh sometimes. I was challenged by the cold, raccoons stealing my food, (even a black bear with whom I spent almost one week with him circling around my camp), mosquitos were one of the hardest thing to deal with. It was a great trip and I plan to go back out there for sure. I want to build a log cabin or something. Here some pics of what I lived in:

Ok, why am I sharing this on a HUSNG poker forum ?!? eheheheh! I'm not sure, but it's like a way for me to "get involved". I'm a person who usually do things by myself and I do quite well alone. But I think in poker, you need to share. You need help. Well, I think I need help, I'm just not sure how and where to get it and actually, I'm not even sure what I want exactly.

Now, lets talk about poker... I've been playing since 2006, online only. I've played only NLHE. I played SNG, ring (6max mostly), mtts, and HUSNG. For the last two years, (except the one in the wood) I was focusing on HUSNG. I have read a lot and watch a lot of vids. But my biggest problem is, I think, I was studying to much and not playing enough. I was scared. As soon as things went wrong, I had a hard time dealing with it and it's like I didnt want to play anymore. So it's like I never knew if I was able to beat the micros or not. I want it so bad !! eheheh

So, that brings me to my challenge. I want to know where I stand. I want a sample that can give me an idea, so, I decided to play 1000 games, 3.50$, reg speed, on stars.

Sadly for me, I'm not that good with maths. I have a hard time with it, it's like my brain shuts down when it comes to math. I hate it (not math, but the fact that I suck at it). I even went to university to take a course in mathematic to try to deal with that issue and it did not went really well actually. :D Although everywhere else I manage to get A+

Anyways. I'd like to hear from people. To get advice. I'm not ready yet to invest money in courses or coaching, I think that beating micros should be doable with free stuff. I just want to do that volume challenge and see from there.

So I give myself until march 10 to have my 1000 games.

Here is where I am now. I'm not really happy. I'm not sure what to think:

I'm not really sure what the $EV means. I mean, I get it like "If, when I was allin, my hands have held, I would be up 44, but now I'm down 42". Oh my god ! I am so terribly unlucky! blah blah bleh! cry cry! Whine, whine!surpriseehehehe!! I'm pretty sure it's not that. I feel a little bit retarded asking for that, but as I said , i'm not that good with math and stats, so, if someone could explain it to me in simple terms....(Like really simple terms)  I would really appreciate it.

And also, do you think someone who actually have a hard time with math should give up the idea a making a little money from poker ? ( I dont want to get rich, wink just pocket money)

Best of luck to all of you,

No need to be a math genius

No need to be a math genius in order to make money in poker. But why would you decide to play regular speed? They take like as forever.
Regarding the Net Winnings and the $EV; the net winnings is the amount which you actually won. The $EV is the amount that you would had been entitled too. Imagening it like this:
1) You are all in on the flop
2) There are 1000 chips in the pot
3) You both show each other your cards
4) Your chance of winning this hand, versus your opponents hand is 65%
Now, from a mathematical point of view, you would be entitled to receive 650 chips (65% of the 1000 chips mentioned above), but, you will either win 1000 chips or win no chips at all (lose the hand). If you win 1000 chips you received 350 more chips than you should have and your net winnings will be higher than your $EV (expected value) and you are "running above EV". If you lose the hand you receive 650 chips less than you should have and your net winnings will be lower than your $EV and you are "running below EV"
Once you have a big enough sample size of tournaments and hands, the $EV can show you what you should had earned if your EV came true everytime. Before you have played 5000 to 10000 tournaments you should not even think about considering the $EV.

Thank you Barrin for your

Thank you Barrin for your answer. It's just... perfectly clear.

The reasons I play reg speed are various:

First, what got me into HUSNG is HU CG. Ultimately, I would love to play HU CG. From what I read everywhere the rake at micro HU CG is ridiculous and unbeatable so, I got into HUSNG. Rake is also the reason why I started at 3.50 instead of 1.50 since I think it's a little less.

Second, I kind of take maybe longer time then the average to adjust to my opponents. Reg speed give me more time to observe what they do and adapt. I have some nitty tendencies that I'm fighting with so it worked better for me in reg speed.

Third, I come across a LOT of players (almost third of them) open raising 16BB, cbetting commiting half their stacks. Against that, I'm having trouble finding other options than to "catch a hand" (even middle pair, just a little something) and sometimes "catching a hand" takes a little time but once you get it, you get their stacks.

Forth, I'm not concern at all by an "hourly rate" or anything of the sort, I'm trying to learn and get better. Right now, I have all the time in the world to play.

That said, I'm not saying I will never play turbos. I have played more reg speed but maybe with more confidence I might play turbos as well.

What I need, is confidence in my game. It seems to be the thing I have trouble to get since no one around me play poker. I'm often really confused. I'm a little jealous of people who have been playing poker for 6 months, starts HUSNG and shows graph that goes straight up hill.

I'm at 285 games right now.
