Super Turbo Heads Up SNG Series (Part Two): Gameplay

RyPac13's picture

RyPac plays super turbo heads up sng on Black Chip

In part two of his heads up sng super turbo series, RyPac heads to Black Chip Poker on the Merge Network, where he plays a series of matches at the $15 buyin level.  He pushes away a few bluffs and discusses what led him to those decisions, he talks a bit about board texture and how that relates to continuation betting and double barreling (particularly "thin" value barreling) and discusses his approach to these games.

I really think the chances of him having anything worse than Kx in the screenshot hand are slim to none, but that's also some hindsight talking.

Let me know what you guys think about this one, it's my first live play video in awhile, so I definitely felt like I was on speed explaining my thoughts (versus the last dozen or so videos mostly leakfinder with pause/play/rant features).  I thought it came out well/had a good range of situations (common situations too, so particularly valuable ones).

Nice vid but would be better if you played different opponents imo, not just rematching one guy

I played two guys and will vary it up in the future, it just so happened that this one guy kept wanting to rematch and was pretty solid for the $15 level and good spots just came up.

Only watched the first few minutes of it and am already confused about the format.

Is this a SuperTurbo that starts with full stacks, but at 25/50, so 30bb effective stacks ?  Just haven't seen this before.

RyPac13's picture

RyPac13 says:

Yes, it's a super turbo structure on the merge network (black chip skin, same players/setup/site as carbon, lock, rpm, hero, nordica, playersonly, etc.).

It starts with 30bb stacks as you can see and blinds raise every 3 minutes.  They double, however, so the structure is actually steeper than the Stars/FTP versions, and probably allows for a slightly smaller max winrate, even though it starts deeper.

For an extreme analogy think about a Stars regular speed structure potential edge versus a deeper structure of 150bb that doubles every 1 minute.  The 75bb regular speed would offer a much larger potential edge, as the 150bb one would be under 20bb within 4 minutes every game.

I don't know, I quite enjoyed watching Rypac play the same person a few times and making adjustments in the early levels based on what he has seen in early games.

I've just started playing the Hyper Turbos on Stars so I'm really looking forward to seeing where Rypac takes this series.

Oh, didn't even realize that while watching - already thought it's a cool format where you can have a little higher edge.

Great video, looking forward to the next part of the series :-)

Nice work! But can we expect to see video on PokerStars Hyper-turbo?

1:40 why are you betting 3/4 not just half pot?

Basically the flush draws and weak pairs (and potentially high cards) I felt would likely call the 3/4 size just about as often as the 1/2 size.  I'm also very comfortable turning up my bluffing frequency in that exact situation if I find my opponent folding a lot, it can be an easy way to destroy somebody afraid to cbet (they often don't adjust well, and if they adjust by checking back some value hands or bluffing the turn a lot there are some good things I can do still to readjust and stay ahead).

It's similar to why I don't often min bet in limped pots (unless we're under 15bb deep, in which case a min bet is just a large % of the stacks and OK to me), the results aren't very favorable against loose opponents (not enough value) and the fold equity isn't amazing either (often people will peel).

I will say that a half pot bet is OK in that situation, you just need to fire two barrels a lot more often and keep your cool when you inevitably level yourself a few times (though that's true of any situation really).

Hi Kusarigama, I can't currently play on PokerStars and don't plan on that changing in the near future, so any PokerStars videos would be leakfinders.

I thought the video was great and I would love to see another Merge Super Turbo video in the near future.

Thanks, I review some hyper turbo hands in a free video tonight and PHMERC kicks off his super turbo series on Merge on Friday.
