Basically, at the $60+ levels, regulars would refuse to play other regulars. Eventually, not enough games launched, and good regs organized a group to require the top 100 or so regs to sit other regs. This made "weak regs" move down levels, and allowed the top 100 or so regs to sit the bad players, without allowing the "weak regs" to freeroll that stake.
There are stat requirements to make the top 100 or so, so it's not just subjective voting. It's a pretty decent system that rewards good players.
Dunno, if it is such a good idea. Isn't it fact that lots of HU Cash players changed to HU SNG because they got sick of the bumhunting in HU Cash? What the cartel is doing is not much different anymore.
Once Pokerstars will introduce Jackpot SNGs HU SNG will lose traffic, because it just got really 'unfriendly' nowadays. What's the top 100 going to do then?

Regs only play bad players already. Whether it's the best regs or all regs, the difference is not going to be too big. It's really not a difference for a losing player.
The difference is in regs fighting each other to determine who the best regs are. It's like king of the hill now, you have to earn the ability to play bad players all day, it's no longer assumed if you have a bankroll and can beat a bad player you can play a certain buyin level.
As far as hu cash, barrin, I think you have it backwards. Lots of bumhunters came from hu cash to husng, bc so many husng regs were not fighting other regs. So they just got to fish all day without much difficulty. Groups now require you to fight for the ability to get easy games.
