Are Turbos a thing of the past?

Hey guys, i just recently came back to Poker after not playing for a couple of years.

The hyper turbos seem to be more popular than the turbos nowadays.

I wanted to ask the people that play them why this is. Are they more profitable? More fun? Softer? Is it even a good idea to still play turbos or are they now outdated?

They're more profitable in

They're more profitable in terms of $/hr at same stakes. More fun is subjective--they're shorter, so for many people it's easier to play them since you can end sessions easier. Softer depends on site and stakes a lot, but definitely they are higher traffic since they are more popular.

Turbos can still a good idea at very low stakes since they are lower variance so you can get away with more aggressive bankroll management and smaller swings--this lets you play higher than you could at hypers which makes up for the lower $/hr--but I think most players end up transitioning into hypers to get more volume and a higher hourly. At the same time there are still some turbo regs who are making decent money playing exclusively turbos, so it's definitely still possible to stay only playing turbos and do fine.

Hope that helps!

Is this true? Lets say for simplicity you have a 50% winrate at hypers and turbos. Is there any difference in variance between them? Is there any difference in variance between them and coinflipping? Seems like they all should follow a binomial distribution.

I am no expert but I believe

I am no expert but I believe it is because your roi is higher in turbos vs. hypers.  I'd even speculate that if you wanted to build a roll from the micros that regular speed games would be the fastest IF you could practice aggressive but disciplined bankroll management.

If you have the same winrate

If you have the same winrate at turbos and hypers you're doing something very wrong. Winrates at turbos are much higher.

And on top of this you have a higher ROI, which lowers Kelly Criterion requirements for bankroll management.

x2 on turbos being great for

x2 on turbos being great for building a roll.  I tried to do aggresssive BR management with hypers and it was a fail.

I would warn about the emotional issues with hypers as well.  Samzilla's blog on this site shows how easy it is to break even for 500 hypers at low stakes despite good play.  You might not be bothered by the variance and such, but I couldn't handle them.

At Turbo speed games you  can

At Turbo speed games you  can achieve a WR between 55-60%.

I'm referring to stakes 20$-50$ .
